LondonEnergy has taken a significant step forward in its decarbonization efforts by adding a fully electric Volvo FM bulker to its fleet. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels.
The environmental benefits of the Volvo FM truck are impressive, offering a 92% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to its diesel counterpart over its entire lifecycle. This includes emissions from production (raw material extraction, transportation, and assembly), usage (fuel production, consumption, and servicing), and end-of-life (recycling emissions and credits). Additionally, the electric vehicle contributes to substantial savings in materials and water consumption.
Beyond operational CO2 savings, Volvo’s HGVs are the first globally to be produced with fossil-free steel and use batteries manufactured at a plant powered entirely by renewable energy.
Katie Blowes, Waste Operations Manager at LondonEnergy, commented on the new addition: “This state-of-the-art vehicle will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and provide essential real-world data to guide future fleet procurement as we strive for net zero. Our collaboration with Volvo over the past two years has been invaluable in understanding and implementing these technologies with minimal operational changes, leading to substantial environmental improvements without disrupting our processes.”
The Volvo FM Electric tractor features a 6×2 configuration and is powered by five 90kWh lithium-ion batteries, totaling 450kWh. It will be used to transport materials from the company’s waste transfer station in Islington to the EcoPark recycling and energy recovery facility in Edmonton. This regular route through densely populated areas will directly benefit the local community by reducing emissions and noise pollution.
LondonEnergy also operates several other electric vehicles, including cars and vans. Data from the new Volvo FM Electric truck will be crucial in informing future procurement decisions and supporting the shift to more sustainable, carbon-neutral transportation solutions.
